Where & When I Learned To Catch Fish In Louisiana's Marsh

My beginnings in inshore fishing began the way most do: going fishing with my dad. Rain or shine, we'd go down to Hopedale (or Delacroix, Rigolets, Lake Pontchartrain....we fished a lot of different places) and launch the boat to make the best of the conditions.

Some days were better than others, sure. But we never got skunked and always did well for what the conditions were.

On those trips my dad taught me what it took to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh and, most important, I was paying attention to the environment and taking it all in. What I learned on those fishing trips became a good "baseline" to use so that, upon reaching adulthood, I could go forth and catch fish on my own.

This "baseline" of inshore fishing knowledge makes up a portion of the foundational knowledge found inside Inshore Fishing 101.

But, there was more to come.

The Perfect Storm

I joined the military out of high school, and that took me away from Louisiana for some time. While I enjoyed my time as an enlisted man, I certainly missed Louisiana and couldn't wait to return to Louisiana and cast a line in her marsh.

Years passed, and eventually the time came: I came home and, with nothing else to do, pulled our trusty flatboat out of storage, gave her a little TLC, then hit the water with a vengeance!

Remembering how to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh was a little like riding a bike; some things I recalled right away, others came back in memories. But the most important thing that happened for my fishing career was the fact that I had to take care of all the details good ol' Dad always did on his own.

Combine that with the fact that I was on leave with no kids, no girlfriend, and no father to tell me go to home....well, you can figure out the rest! I fished my behind off, from sunrise to sunset.

Time on water is the most important thing you can have to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh, and I had that in spades! It was the "perfect storm" to become an expert angler.

But it didn't stop there.

More Fishing Skills

A thing or two (or three) that I had learned in the military transferred over to my fishing career. Yes, I know that sounds crazy but these things really had a hand in knowing how to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh and go on epic fishing trips:

That's not all! Being intensely curious and questioning conventional knowledge was like pouring gasoline on a raging fire: I learned more and more.

Knowing how to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh led me to (successfully) try my hand at guiding, competing in tournaments and tagging fish for research.

Why Sharing My Fishing Knowledge With You Is So Important

To say that I went on some pretty epic fishing trips over the years would be an understatement. But you know what? Those weren't fishing trips so much as they were memory-making trips.

And that's the thing: fishing trips are really more than "just fishing trips". They are an opportunity for self-improvement, bonding with loved ones, finding peace and so much more than the stereotypical "drinking a cold beer and watching a bobber".

Sure, any day on the water is better than a day at work – or however that cliché goes – but we all know that a fishing trip involving catching fish packs way more punch than one that does not.

And that's why I have the "Catch Fish" blog category, so you can easily discover the one piece of practical fishing advice that will set your trips on fire.

90% Of The Battle On Any Fishing Trip Is...

...finding fish in the first place. And that's what the majority of this blog (and my special membership) is geared towards.

It doesn't matter what kind of lure you throw if you find a really good bite. Fish will bite it anyway because they are in a feeding frenzy!

I know how to catch fish in Louisiana's marsh, and can share it with you, too. That's why I strongly suggest you sign up for my newsletter if you haven't done so already.

Tight lines!
